Otamendi retires from Argentina duty after World Cup final loss
Nicolas Otamendi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on a 17-year Argentina career that included a World Cup, 2 Copa America titles and 4 World Cup appearances.
The 38-year-old centre-back made the announcement on Thursday days after Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the World Cup final. That game turned out to be his match for the national team and he made it clear in his message that the loss was painful, but not enough to make him regret the path he took.
"Today I have to write the words of my career " Otamendi wrote on Instagram. "Destiny decided that my last match would be a World Cup final. It did not end the way we wanted. I leave with my head held high knowing that the whole team gave everything until the very last second."
He also expressed his gratitude to Argentina for letting him live his dream.
"Thank you Argentina for allowing me to live the dream of becoming a world champion."
Otamendi earned 139 caps for his country. Was part of one of the most successful periods in the history of the national team. He won the 2022 World Cup claimed two Copa America titles and stayed a player deep into the later years of his career.
He has also recently returned to his home country. After 16 years playing in Europe, where he was with Porto, Valencia, Manchester City and Benfica Otamendi is now with River Plate. His club career will continue,. His time with the national team has ended.
He leaves with a lot behind him. A long career, big trophies and one final appearance, on the stage.
