The UEFA Europa League is Europe's second-tier men's club football competition, bringing together teams from across the continent to compete for a major European trophy and a place in the following season's Champions League. The 2026/27 edition continues with 36 teams in the league phase under UEFA's revamped competition format. What's new in UEFA Europa League 2026/27?
The Europa League does not follow a promotion and relegation system like domestic leagues. Instead, clubs enter the competition through their domestic league and cup positions, UEFA's access list and the qualifying rounds. For 2026/27, qualifying involves 52 clubs and runs from July through August before the 36-team league phase is completed.
The league phase remains central to the competition. Each of the 36 teams plays eight matches against eight different opponents, with four games at home and four away. The top eight teams advance directly to the round of 16, while clubs finishing ninth to 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs. Teams placed 25th to 36th are eliminated.
The 2026/27 campaign also offers an important incentive for the eventual winner. The Europa League champions earn a place in the league phase of the 2027/28 Champions League if they have not already qualified through their domestic competition, as well as a place in the 2027 UEFA Super Cup.
