UEFA Champions League
The UEFA Champions League is Europe's premier club football competition, bringing together the best teams from across the continent to compete for the most prestigious prize in European club football. The 2026/27 edition is the 72nd season of the competition and the third to use the expanded league phase format. Paris Saint-Germain are the current champions, after beating Arsenal on penalties in the 2025/26 final to retain the trophy.
What's new in UEFA Champions League 2026/27?
The 2026/27 Champions League continues with 36 teams in the league phase, with 29 clubs qualifying directly and seven more joining after the play-off round. Unlike the traditional group stage, all 36 teams are placed in one league table, with each club playing eight matches against eight different opponents.
The league phase introduces a different route into the knockout rounds. The top eight teams qualify directly for the round of 16, while clubs finishing from ninth to 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs. Teams ranked from 25th to 36th are eliminated from European competition. The competition began with qualifying in July 2026, while the league phase draw is scheduled for August 27.
The new campaign will also feature a new generation of European contenders looking to challenge the established elite. Paris Saint-Germain enter as defending champions after winning consecutive Champions League titles, while clubs such as Arsenal, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester City remain among the leading names expected to compete deep into the tournament.
