Major League Soccer (MLS) is the top-flight professional football competition in the United States and Canada, featuring 30 clubs divided between the Eastern and Western Conferences. Unlike most European leagues, MLS determines its champion through a regular season followed by the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. Inter Miami are the current MLS Cup champions, after winning the 2025 MLS Cup and claiming the first league title in the club's history.
What's new in MLS 2026?
The 2026 season features all 30 MLS clubs competing across two conferences, with each team playing 34 regular-season matches. Clubs play their conference opponents twice, home and away, while also facing six teams from the opposite conference. The regular season concludes with Decision Day on November 7.
The 2026 campaign also has a major scheduling change because the FIFA World Cup is being hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. MLS pauses from May 25 to July 16 before resuming regular-season action, allowing the league to accommodate the World Cup. The season also marks the opening of Inter Miami's new Miami Freedom Park in April.
The playoff race remains central to the MLS format. The top nine teams from each conference qualify for the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. The eighth- and ninth-place teams meet in a single-game Wild Card match, while the top seven teams advance directly to the Round One best-of-three series. The playoffs then determine the MLS Cup champion in December.

The defending MLS Cup champions remain one of the main teams to beat. Inter Miami's star-studded squad and experience of winning the 2025 title make them a leading candidate to compete for another MLS Cup.
Los Angeles FC
LAFC continue to be one of the strongest teams in the Western Conference. Their depth, experience in the MLS playoffs and ability to compete against the league's leading clubs make them a serious contender for the title.
FC Cincinnati
FC Cincinnati have established themselves as one of the strongest regular-season teams in the Eastern Conference. After reaching the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2025, they have the quality and experience to make another deep playoff run in 2026.
