Mac Allister admits he is ‘very sad’ over lack of new Liverpool contract offer

The Argentina international is still on the deal he signed after joining from Brighton in 2023, with just 24 months remaining. Liverpool have renewed the contracts of Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai this year, but Mac Allister has not received the same offer.

Speaking before Liverpool’s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid, the World Cup winner was open about how that has made him feel.

“As everyone knows, there is still a possibility,” Mac Allister said. “I was told the club could not extend my contract, which of course makes me very sad.

“I think everyone can see that I always give 100 percent for this club, every day in training. Some matches are good, some are bad, but I always try to give my best.”

He said he was happy for Szoboszlai and Gravenberch, while admitting their new deals made his own situation harder to ignore.

“I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts, and that makes me happy. At the same time, it makes me sad because I have not.”

Mac Allister insisted he will remain fully committed for as long as he is at Anfield.

“There is still time. I will give 100 percent until the last day. Let’s see what happens. I had the chance to leave this summer. Right now, I am at the club where I need to be.”

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola played down the immediate concern. He said Mac Allister remains an important player and that there is time to discuss his contract.

“We all have responsibilities and contracts with the club,” Iraola said. “We have not had much time to play together, but Mac Allister is very important and has played a lot of minutes. We have time to talk about those contract matters.”

Real Madrid and Manchester City were strongly linked with Mac Allister during the summer, but neither move happened. His form has dipped at times over the past year, though Iraola could still decide that he is worth keeping after watching him closely over the coming months.
