Fiorentina sack Fabio Grosso after three straight Serie A defeats

Defeats to Roma, Frosinone and Torino proved enough for the Tuscan club to end Grosso’s spell less than three months after appointing him.

The decision came as a surprise.

After Sunday’s home defeat to Torino, Fiorentina officials did not speak to the media. The message from the club appeared to be that Grosso still had their backing despite the poor start and growing fan protests.

But that support has now disappeared.

In a short statement, Fiorentina confirmed they had withdrawn their appointment of the Abruzzo-born coach after three matches and three defeats.

The latest loss was particularly damaging. La Viola led Torino at home but failed to hold on, leaving the club with another defeat and no points from their opening three fixtures.

Fiorentina now travel to Venezia on Friday, where whoever takes charge will face immediate pressure to stop the slide.

Grosso arrived in Florence at the start of June after his spell with Sassuolo. Sporting director Fabio Paratici had picked him to lead a rebuild after Fiorentina only secured survival with two matches left last season.

The club had spent heavily over the summer. Fiorentina brought in 13 new players in a €130 million transfer campaign, and there had been real hope that the new squad could push for European qualification.

Instead, the team have looked disjointed from the start.

Fiorentina have not announced Grosso’s replacement, but reports suggest Paolo Vanoli could return to the Artemio Franchi.

Vanoli, 54, took charge last November after another poor start to the 2025-26 season. Fiorentina spent much of that campaign battling relegation, but he guided them to 15th place before the club chose to part ways with him at the end of the season.

Now Fiorentina may turn back to a coach they dismissed only a few months ago as they try to avoid another season dominated by a relegation battle.
