Sancho weighs major career decision as free-agent options grow worldwide
Jadon Sancho is weighing one of the biggest decisions of his career as he considers where to go next.
At 26 Sancho should be in the years of his career. Instead he is an agent looking at options across several countries and trying to find the right place to rebuild a career that has fallen well short of early expectations.
There is interest from clubs in England, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
That range gives Sancho plenty to think about. It also shows that his reputation has not disappeared, after a difficult few years. The question is no longer whether clubs still recognise his talent. It is whether Sancho can choose an environment that gives him the football, trust and confidence he needs to show it again.
His rise at Borussia Dortmund made him one of Europe’s exciting young attackers. His goals, assists and fearless play from areas turned him into a global name and Manchester United paid around £73 million to bring him back to England in 2021.
The expectation was huge.
Sancho was supposed to become one of the Premier League’s leading forwards.
It did not work out that way at Old Trafford. Five years later he is looking for a club without a transfer fee attached to him.
A return to Dortmund remains a possibility. It would take Sancho back to the club where he played his football and where he became one of the game’s most talked-about young players. Dortmund know his strengths better than teams and their interest in a reunion has not gone away.
For Sancho that option has appeal. He would return to a league a familiar club and a system that once allowed him to play with freedom.. It would also mean revisiting a chapter from his past rather than opening a completely new one.
A move elsewhere could offer that start.
Another chance in the Premier League is attractive. Sancho will need to be certain that the club, manager and role are right. He spent season on loan at Aston Villa and showed flashes of quality although not often enough for the club to keep him permanently.
Several other Premier League clubs are interested. Still Sancho knows he needs more than a badge or a high-profile move. He needs to play regain confidence and recover the attacking instinct that once made him so dangerous.
Roma are thought to be one of the interesting options in Serie A. Turkey and Saudi Arabia could offer major wages, a different lifestyle and a passionate fanbase. Sancho has also been linked with Dubai-based Arabian Falcons and Brazilian side Palmeiras.
Nothing has been decided yet. Sources say Sancho is optimistic about the choice but he knows it could shape the rest of his career.
The next move is, about finding the version of himself that has been missing for long.
