Enzo Fernandez joins Manchester City in £125m blockbuster move

The Argentina midfielder has signed a 5-year contract running until the summer of 2031, completing one of the biggest and most dramatic moves of the window.

This had been brewing for a while.

Fernandez had been pushing for a move away from Stamford Bridge since the start of 2026, and although Real Madrid was initially seen as a possible destination, that route never seriously opened. In fact, the situation became tense enough earlier in the year that then-Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior suspended him for 2 matches after he considered the idea of switching to Spain.

Real never followed through. They even issued a statement making clear they had no intention of signing him, which left Manchester City as the only truly viable landing spot once Enzo Maresca made it known that he wanted a reunion.

City and Chelsea finally reached an agreement on deadline day, and the end result is a fee that breaks the English transfer record all over again.

Fernandez joins a squad already packed with midfield talent, but the club clearly see him as more than just another high-end option. He is arriving as a major piece of Maresca's next City side, a player trusted to help control games, dictate tempo and carry responsibility in a team built to win everything.

Fernandez also sounded very aware of the standard waiting for him inside the dressing room.

"If you look at the whole squad, Man City have quality in every position. I want to learn from my new team-mates and become a better player."

He closed with something closer to a promise.

"I am proud of constantly improving my skills. Anyone who has worked with me knows how hard I train every day and how much I give in matches. I always do my best and I can promise Manchester City that this will continue while I am here."

For Chelsea, this is another major reshaping of the squad. For City, it is a statement, expensive, aggressive and very clear. They believe Enzo Fernandez is worth building around.
