Chido Obi leaves Manchester United for Eredivisie loan spell with Willem II

The deal does not contain a buy option, which makes the purpose very clear. United want the 18‑year‑old to play, grow and then return.

For Obi, this is a step. 

Obi has already tasted football at Old Trafford but this move should give Obi a far more valuable thing now: regular minutes and a real chance to test Obi in a first‑team environment.

"This is a step in my career " Obi said on the clubs website. "I want to play much as possible gain experience and continue developing myself. I will give everything for the team. Hope I can contribute the values that are needed."

Obi made history at United when Obi became the player ever to start for the club doing so at 17 years and 156 days against Brentford on May 4 2025. In total Obi has made 8 appearances for the Red Devils so far.

United signed Obi from Arsenal in 2024 after Obi had scored 32 goals in 18 matches for the Gunners U18 side the season before. Since moving to Manchester Obi has kept producing at youth level scoring 36 goals in 56 games across Uniteds U18 and U21 teams.

Obi is at the stage where academy numbers alone're no longer enough. Obi needs minutes, more physical games and the experience of competing every week for a place.

At Willem II Obi will battle with Devin Haen for a starting spot. There is also a bit of precedent here. Borussia Dortmund once sent Alexander Isak to Willem II on loan in 2019. The striker exploded there with 14 goals in 18 games.

That does not guarantee anything of course.. It does show this can be a useful place for Obi, a young forward to sharpen himself quickly.

United have protected themselves too. Obi is still under contract until 2028. There is no immediate pressure around Obis longer‑term future. This loan is about development not, about drifting out of the clubs plans.
