Man City backed to sweep aside struggling Coventry as Lampard faces daunting test

Coventry have opened the 2026-27 season with a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal and a 1-0 home loss to Hull City. They have no points, no goals and now face the league leaders at a stadium where City have made a habit of punishing teams who arrive short on confidence.

The two sides have not met in any competition since March 2002, when both were in England’s second tier and City won 4-2 at Maine Road. Their last Premier League meeting came even earlier, in 2000-01, a season that ended with both clubs relegated.

Lampard has only one EPL win from his last 19 games

Lampard’s Premier League record has become a difficult one to ignore. He has won only 4 of his last 32 matches in the division, drawing 8 and losing 20. More starkly, he has won just 1 of his last 19 top-flight games, a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth while Chelsea’s interim manager in May 2023.

Another defeat would mean Coventry have lost their first 3 league matches for the 5th time in club history. It would also be the first time they had opened a season with 3 straight losses without scoring a single goal.

That puts obvious pressure on Taiwo Awoniyi and the rest of Coventry’s attack to finally produce something in the final third.

City, meanwhile, are chasing another familiar milestone. A win would give them 3 victories from their opening 3 Premier League games for the 3rd time in 4 seasons, after doing the same in 2023-24 and 2024-25. They could also win their first 2 home league games for the 5th time in 6 campaigns.

City are unbeaten in their last 30 league matches against newly promoted sides, winning 27 and drawing 3. Their last defeat in this category came against Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United in April 2021.

Enzo Maresca does have one small reason to stay alert. His last match against a promoted club ended in a 3-1 defeat for Chelsea, coincidentally against Leeds.

Coventry can at least point to a more encouraging historical record in this fixture. City have won only 1 of their last 8 Premier League meetings with the Sky Blues, drawing 4 and losing 3, while their last top-flight win over Coventry dates back to 1992-93.

Erling Haaland remains the main threat. The Norwegian has scored 19 goals in 20 Premier League appearances against promoted clubs, and although this will be his first match against Coventry, he has already scored against 23 of the 24 teams he has faced in the competition. Sunderland are the only exception.

Rayan Cherki is also flying. The Frenchman has 4 direct goal contributions in his first 2 league matches this season, with 2 goals and 2 assists. Across his Premier League career, he has now produced 15 goal contributions in 20 appearances, scoring 5 times and creating 10 more.

New signing Elliot Anderson has also made a fast impression. Against Crystal Palace, he recorded 3 interceptions, 5 tackles, 5 recoveries and 100 passes, becoming the first City midfielder to hit all of those numbers in a single league match since Opta began tracking the data in 2003-04.

Both teams want to play possession football, so there should be plenty for neutral fans to watch. City lead the league for completed passes with 1,315, and 94.6 percent of them have been short passes, the highest proportion in the division.

But Coventry will need much more than neat passing if they are to leave Manchester with anything. They need a goal, a defensive performance close to perfect and probably a little help from City wasting chances.

To underline just how difficult this task is for the Sky Blues, Manchester City also lead the league for passing accuracy at 90.9 percent and for accuracy when passing under high pressure at 85.8 percent.

On the injury front, both Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes are expected to return for the home side, leaving City close to full strength, while record signing Enzo Fernandez could make his home debut.

Coventry remain without Haji Wright, Kaine Kessler-Hayden and Luke Woolfenden. Frank Onyeka and Bobby Thomas will both face late fitness tests.
