PSG hold firm against Bayern to reach Champions League final and set up Arsenal showdown

Paris Saint-Germain became the first French club to reach three Champions League finals after a 1-1 draw away to Bayern Munich sealed a 6-5 aggregate semi-final victory and sent the defending champions through to face Arsenal in Budapest.

Luis Enrique had compared the rivalry between the two teams to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal before the match, suggesting that the best opponents push each other to even greater heights.

On this evidence, he had a point. PSG arrived in Bavaria holding a narrow 5-4 lead from the first leg and wasted no time tightening their grip on the tie. Just three minutes in, they struck with ruthless simplicity.

Fabian Ruiz split the Bayern defense with a superb pass, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia instantly turned provider, teeing up Ousmane Dembele for a sharp first-time finish into the corner. It was a brutal start for the home side and the perfect way for PSG to assert control.

Bayern did try to respond quickly. Luis Diaz and Michael Olise both fired over as the hosts looked to turn the pressure back on, and Vincent Kompany's side began to create more discomfort for PSG's backline . The Bayern coach was furious at one key moment when his team was denied a penalty after Vitinha's clearance appeared to strike Joao Neves on the hand inside the area.

Instead of getting relief, Bayern nearly suffered again. Only minutes later, Neves almost made matters worse for them by forcing Manuel Neuer into an excellent save with a far-post header from a deep Vitinha free-kick. It was another reminder that even while protecting a lead, PSG remained dangerous.

At the other end, Matvey Safonov had to be sharp too.The PSG goalkeeper made a brilliant save near half-time to keep out a fierce Jamal Musiala effort, preserving the visitors' advantage at the end of a highly entertaining first period.

After the break, PSG stayed disciplined. This was not the wild, free-flowing attacking version of the Paris side seen in the first leg, but it was a mature and controlled performance. Bayern had the ball and the territory for spells, yet they often looked more like a side knocking on the door than one battering it down.

And PSG still carried the greater threat in transition. Neuer was by far the busier goalkeeper in the second half, producing more strong stops to deny both Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue as Luis Enrique's side continued to find space on the break.

This was not their most explosive night in attack. But it may have been one of their smartest.

Against a Bayern team usually so prolific, PSG defended with composure, stayed emotionally calm , and picked their moments well enough to come through without ever seeming truly shaken. When Harry Kane finally smashed home left-footed beyond Safonov for his 14th Champions League goal of the season, it came too late to change the story.

It was only a consolation. The bigger prize now belongs to PSG, who return to the final once again and will meet Arsenal with the chance to defend their crown. For Luis Enrique, it means a third Champions League final as a coach, after winning it with Barcelona in 2015 and with PSG last season.
For Bayern, the disappointment is sharp.

Their hopes of a 12th European Cup final are over, and they have now failed to get through any of their last six Champions League semi-finals.Remarkably, this defeat was only their second in 30 home matches in the competition, but it was enough to end the dream.
