Leverkusen storms past Leipzig to crash back into the top 4 and ignite the Champions League race

It was a huge result, and one that became even more valuable in the context of the day's earlier drama. 

After Stuttgart's late equalizer against Hoffenheim, Leverkusen knew a win here would put real pressure on the teams around them and hand them a genuine chance of finishing in the top 4. They took that opportunity ruthlessly, even if the opening stages had suggested the night might go very differently. 

Leipzig started on the front foot, fully aware that victory would have sealed their own top-4 place. Romulo Cardoso was the main danger early on, first dragging a shot just wide and then seeing another effort cleared off the line by Aleix Garcia. Those were huge moments, and Leipzig would come to regret them badly. 

Leverkusen punished them with brutal efficiency. The breakthrough came when Nathan Tella collected a quick forward ball inside the box and showed great composure to square for former Leipzig striker Patrik Schick, who calmly finished against his old club. 

That goal changed the game. Once ahead, Leverkusen began to flow and could easily have doubled their lead moments later. Tella burst down the left and fired across goal, forcing Maarten Vandevoordt into a save, and when the rebound fell to Schick, El Chadaille Bitshiabu had to produce an excellent goal-line clearance to stop a second . 

Leipzig never really recovered their early sharpness. They still had a half-chance to level before the break when Xaver Schlager let fly from around 30 meters , but his effort drifted narrowly wide as Mark Flekken scrambled across. Instead of going in level, Leipzig found themselves 2 down by half-time. 

The second goal arrived through Tella again. This time, the forward timed his run perfectly to meet a clever Aleix Garcia pass and finished with confidence, capping a superb 1st-half display in which he had already been both creator and scorer. 

Even after the break, Tella looked far from done. He remained Leverkusen's most dangerous outlet and was involved again when a precise pass into the box created another big opening for Schick, only for the striker to see his effort blocked by Vandevoordt's leg. Leipzig tried to shift the momentum with attacking substitutions, but they never found the spark they needed. 

Instead, it was Leverkusen who kept threatening. Alejandro Grimaldo came close to ending the contest with a free-kick that clipped the roof of the net in the 79th minute, and the home side eventually made the points safe late on. Schick raced through on goal and finished to make it 3-0, putting the match beyond Leipzig's reach. 

Christoph Baumgartner did pull 1 back for the visitors, but even that did not change the final feel of the night. Leverkusen hit back immediately, and Schick completed his hat-trick when he was sent through once more and finished clinically for the 4th goal. It was the perfect ending for the hosts and the perfect summary of Leipzig's collapse once Leverkusen found their rhythm. 

The result means Leverkusen has now won 5 of their last 7 meetings with Leipzig and, more importantly, control their own top-4 hopes heading into the final 2 rounds. 

For Leipzig, the damage is limited but still real. They remain well placed and need just 1 win from their final 2 matches to secure Champions League qualification, but this was a reminder that nothing can yet be taken for granted. 

For Leverkusen, though, the message was much louder. They are still alive, still dangerous , and now very much back in the race.
