10-man Stuttgart strike at the death to crush Hoffenheim in a wild top-4 thriller

It was a result that felt devastating for the hosts and deeply energizing for the visitors. 

After back-to-back 2-1 wins had ended a 5-match winless run, Hoffenheim came into this showdown with momentum and quickly showed why they believed this was a chance to seize control of the race. 

They struck in the 8th minute through a move built on the quality of Fisnik Asllani. The Kosovo forward produced an excellent piece of play before feeding Andrej Kramaric, who finished coolly into the bottom-left corner. It was the ideal start for Hoffenheim and a reminder of how dangerous Kramaric remains in decisive moments. 

But Stuttgart responded well. In the 20th minute, a quick counterattack brought them level as defender Ramon Hendriks pushed forward to support Chris Fuhrich, who delicately lifted the ball into the net and silenced the PreZero Arena. 

That silence lasted only 3 minutes. Hoffenheim hit back almost immediately, with Bazoumana Toure restoring their lead after reacting sharply to a loose ball and firing into the bottom-right corner from the edge of the box. It was a scrappy but valuable goal , and it put the hosts back in charge before half-time. 

From there, the rest of the 1st half had flashes of promise but no more finishing touch. That meant Hoffenheim went into the break ahead for the 14th time in the league this season, usually a very healthy sign given they had won 12 of the previous 13 games in which they led at the interval. 

They then seemed to put themselves in complete control just 2 minutes into the 2nd half. Toure once again was heavily involved, showing excellent skill to bring down a long ball before picking out Kramaric at the far post. The Croatian made no mistake, completing his 23rd Bundesliga brace and his 2nd in 3 matches to make it 3-1. 

At that stage, Hoffenheim should probably have buried Stuttgart for good. Asllani had a header saved, Tim Lemperle hit the post , and the home side created enough openings to turn the score into 4-1. Those misses would come back to haunt them. 

Stuttgart stayed alive, and with a team that had scored in both halves more often than almost anyone in the league before this round, that was dangerous. 

Chris Fuhrich was central again. His smart switch to the right opened the space for Jamie Leweling to surge forward and drill in a low cross that Ermedin Demirovic converted at the far post, dragging Stuttgart back into the game and reviving their hopes in the battle for 4th. 

Then came what looked like the moment that should have ended those hopes. Stuttgart captain Atakan Karazor cynically clipped the heels of the advancing Asllani , and referee Sascha Stegemann showed no hesitation in producing a red card. With Stuttgart down to 10 men, Hoffenheim appeared to have everything they needed to close the game out. 

Instead, they lost control completely. They failed to make their extra man count and paid the ultimate price with virtually the last action of the match. Just moments after missing a free header in front of an open goal, Tiago Tomas reacted quickest to convert after Angelo Stiller's shot had been blocked, rescuing a point for Stuttgart and ripping 2 out of Hoffenheim's hands. 

It was a brutal ending for the home side. Rather than opening daylight in the race for Champions League football, they now remain locked in the fight, with both teams sitting only 3 points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen. That shifts immediate attention toward the BayArena, where both Hoffenheim and Stuttgart will now be hoping RB Leipzig can avoid defeat. 

But for now, the story belongs to Stuttgart's refusal to die. Down 3-1, then down to 10 men, they still found a way to strike last.
