The EFL Championship is England's second-tier football competition, featuring 24 clubs competing for promotion to the Premier League and to avoid relegation to League One. Coventry City are the current Championship champions, after winning the 2025/26 title with 95 points and finishing 11 points clear of Ipswich Town. Hull City completed the promoted trio by beating Middlesbrough in the play-off final.
What's new in EFL Championship 2026/27?
Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City have left the Championship after securing promotion to the Premier League, while Oxford United, Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday were relegated to League One. They are replaced by Premier League relegated sides West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers, alongside League One promoted clubs Cardiff City, Lincoln City and Bolton Wanderers.
The biggest change for 2026/27 is the Championship play-off format. Six teams will now have a route to promotion through the play-offs, rather than four. Clubs finishing seventh and eighth will enter one-off eliminator matches against the teams finishing sixth and fifth respectively, with the winners progressing to two-legged semi-finals against the third- and fourth-placed sides. The final remains a single match at Wembley Stadium.
The new season also features several changes in the dugout. Burnley have appointed Nicky Hayen as head coach following their relegation from the Premier League, while Wolverhampton Wanderers begin the campaign under César Peixoto. The arrival of three recently relegated Premier League clubs adds further experience and squad quality to an already competitive division.

West Ham United
West Ham return to the Championship after ending their 14-year stay in the Premier League. Their squad depth, top-flight experience and resources make the Hammers one of the leading candidates for an immediate return to the Premier League.
Burnley
Burnley are another strong promotion candidate after dropping into the second tier. Despite beginning the campaign with a new head coach in Nicky Hayen, the Clarets have the experience of competing at Premier League level and should be among the teams challenging near the top of the table.
Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wolves have also returned to the Championship after relegation from the Premier League. With a squad containing significant top-flight experience and a new manager in César Peixoto, they have the potential to mount a serious promotion challenge.
