Coppa Italia
The Coppa Italia is Italy's premier domestic knockout football competition, bringing together clubs from across the Italian football pyramid to compete for one of the country's major trophies. Unlike Serie A, the Coppa Italia is decided through knockout rounds, with teams eliminated as the competition progresses. Inter are the current Coppa Italia holders, after beating Lazio 2-0 in the 2026 final at the Stadio Olimpico to win the trophy.
What's new in Coppa Italia 2026/27?
The Coppa Italia does not use a league table or a promotion and relegation system. Instead, 44 clubs take part in the competition, with the tournament beginning with a preliminary round before moving into the main bracket. All Serie A and Serie B clubs are included, with the remaining places completed by invited clubs according to the competition regulations.
The 2026/27 edition continues with a single-elimination format through the preliminary round, round of 32, round of 16 and quarter-finals. The semi-finals are played over two legs, while the final is decided in a single match. The competition officially began with the preliminary round on August 9, 2026, and the final is scheduled for May 19, 2027.
The new campaign also gives clubs from outside Serie A an opportunity to challenge top-flight opposition. The round of 32 already features 12 Serie A teams, while the remaining top-flight clubs enter at the round of 16 stage. This structure can create difficult early ties and gives lower-division sides the chance to produce cup upsets.
