What's new in AFC Champions League Elite 2026/27?
The biggest change for the 2026/27 season is the expansion of the league phase from 24 to 32 clubs. The competition now features 16 teams in the East Region and 16 in the West Region, creating a broader field of leading clubs from across Asia.
Each team plays eight league-stage matches against eight different opponents from its own region, with four games at home and four away. The top eight teams from each region advance to the Round of 16, giving 16 clubs a route into the knockout stage.
The knockout stage retains the competition's regional structure at the Round of 16 before the tournament moves into the centralised Finals. The final stage consists of four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and the final, with all seven matches forming part of the centralised Finals. The format makes the competition different from a traditional domestic league, with teams competing through a league phase before progressing into decisive knockout matches.
The 2026/27 edition also features a stronger representation of clubs from across Asia following the expansion. The AFC confirmed the participating line-ups in June 2026, with clubs from leading football nations across the continent joining the competition.
